Shade's Past

Vailian was born the second son of a thatcher in a small hamlet by the sea. At the age of 15 he set out to find work so that he wouldn't be a drain on his financially strapped parents. After traveling for some time and doing odd jobs on and off, Vailian got a job as a clerk at an oddity store. Working here for the next three years Vailian would often buy items that the store would not, selling some and keeping others. One of these items was a spellbook that had been found after a miner had excavated a cave in. It was here that Vailian first became exposed to magic and it was here that Vailian became Shade.

The spellbook held the lingering influence of a powerful Drow wizard, his personality becoming infused into the magics surrounding the book. The curse that allowed the spirit to remain bound to this world also allowed for it to infest the young inexperienced wizard, plying through pages of magic he did not understand. The subtle influence of the Drow wizard began to plant the seeds of its master plan in Vailian's mind. Taking his little wealth and his spellbook, the wizard now taking to calling himself Shade set out on the road to find more power. The Drow Wizard's spirit is content to wait, knowing if Vailian doesn't reach the required strength to reconstitute the Drow in time than he may deliver the book to someone who can... With his death.

Vailian has no idea of the conflict raging within him between these unseen suggestions and his psyche. Vailian has specialized in Transmutation and has chosen to forgo any learning of enchantments or necromantic magics for the most part. This choice seems natural to him, but is rather the influence of the Drow steering him away from the magics which could reveal his machinations or enchanting suggestions.

Shade doesn't know it yet, but he will be driven to create magical devices of great power, he will even eventually return to necromantic magics... The magic which will allow the Drow to return to the material plane as a Lich and strike down the fool who has been slowly working towards his own doom.

Shade and Harken

Setting out across the sea sent shivers through Vailian, though he would never show it before the mighty barbarian beside him. Together the two had faced down their fair share of challenges and Shade liked to think that he had at last found a friend worth fighting beside and he would be loathe for him to think less of him because of some fear about being swallowed by the sea...

Lost in his thoughts as he was, Shade hadn't even noticed the various vendors and merchants all hawking their fare along the wharf. Taking note all of a sudden of a crowd forming around a menagerie of animals and a strangely tattooed man, he signaled to Thorvald that he would catch up. Pushing through the press of people gathered around the stand he managed to get a sight of what was taking place that so captivated the audience. The purveyor had been showing off his creatures' abilities trying to entice the crowd to action and more purchases. The current stunt focused on a monkey that he had trained to crack the shell of nuts and feed him the nut inside. Finishing with this the monkey would bow and scurry amongst the crowd, handing out nuts for donations into its small felt cap. Behind the man stood rows of cages with all sorts of creatures, some not even unloaded from the side of his well stocked wagon. A lion laid on its side flicking its tail nonchalantly and occasionally yawning, revealing its massive yellowed teeth. A cage of song birds flitted about their gold wired home singing merrily and chasing one another. A smaller cage had a family of rabbits, gathered around what was evidently their mother. Taking in the sights, Shade almost missed the entire next act involving a squirrel which appeared to read a scrap of parchment, until of course it did and everyone began to laugh.

"The squirrel has been trained to receive a special treat, a mixture of nuts... Yes the very same ones the monkey cracks, which it also grinds at the mill stone... Into a paste. This paste is then smeared onto the parchment and the squirrel will hold it before him and feast, quite the enjoyable spectacle for parties or gatherings, as I can myself attest! With every squirrel bought that is trained in this manner I will provide a free jar of the nut spread, it is rather delicious." The merchant turned to discuss a potential sale with someone from the crowd and after a word or two, snapped his fingers to summon the monkey. He pointed at the wagon and off ran the little assistant, throwing back a small tarp and revealing several dozen individual cages of squirrels. The monkey grabbed a cage, used its tail to reposition the tarp as the little critters jostled and ran about in their sudden sight of the light of day, and then the assistant ran back with his cage. The fat, shirtless merchant turned his head, to look at the monkey and snapped his fingers, a darkness crossing over his features as he noticed that the monkey had only partly completed his task. The monkey, not noticing or not concerned by the look, reached out and grabbed at the sack hanging from the sellers waist. Smacking the creatures hand away, he snapped his fingers again, this time getting the response he had been awaiting, the monkey running over to the wagon and pulling out a jar from a small wooden crate, carefully walking back with the item that was almost as big as it was, the monkey was finally given the reward it sought, a small yellow piece of fruit. Carrying on with his sale, the fat man turned back to the buyer, a hint of the noonday sun playing off the many golden baubles adorning him.

Turning his attention back to the varied creatures and cages Vailian notes that there is some movement nearer the end of the long line of beasts. A raven has managed to reach out its beak from its cage and take a piece of straw from the nearby cage of some mean looking dog. Using its beak and talons the ingenious creature snaps the piece of straw to a smaller length and then sticks its foot out, using the straw to insert into the cages lock. After several attempts the piece of straw just folds in on itself, too weak to act as a proper pick for such a task. The raven is not deterred though, and grabs at another piece of straw from the cage, this one much too long. Shade can't help but think of all the insults that have often been hurled about from one drunken lout to another, claiming that they are about as smart as a bird. Clearly they haven't met this bird. The raven reaches out with the piece of straw into the dogs cage, deftly avoiding waking him, but still tugging at the bone that lays before him. Managing to roll the bone forward a bit it grabs at it with its beak, pulling it into its cage and making a small noise as it does. The dog, aroused by the noise, begins to bark incessantly and garners the attention of the salesman. He clicks his tongue at the monkey and nods his head to the dog. The monkey, responding to its masters need, moves over grabs a bit of meat and drops it in the cage before pushing another cover over the crate. As the monkey moves to turn back to its masters' newest display it stops to consider the raven, its wings out and in front of it, forming a small circle which arcs downward to the floor of its cage as if in an extended bow. The monkey turns away and continues on, forgetting the strange pose as suddenly as it noticed it.

The raven, now free to act once more, curls its wings back to its sides and begins to use its beak to start splintering the bone. After a few sharp cracks and a bit of repositioning with its talented talons, the bird has managed to work off a sharpened piece of bone. Taking it once more, like the straw, to the lock it gives it a few twists and turns before the lock pops open quietly.

Not quietly enough it would seem, the monkey having heard the noise begins to make a fuss trying to draw the attention of its master. The fat man, sweating in the hot sun is too busy trying to lead a bear around on a leash and show how it has no problem obeying his commands. Instead of acknowledging the little monkey he tosses another small piece of fruit to quiet the creature down and continue with his presentation. The monkey, having none of the fruit, leaps with all its speed towards the cage door... Just as the raven uses its beak and two claws to swing it wide, holding on to it as it swings out. The monkey crashes through the opening and lands in a still steaming pile of white droppings, losing its small Fez hat and... The raven, clinging by his beak to the wire and releasing his feet, swings his body around to the front of the cage door, grabbing ahold with its feet and releasing his beak, letting his upper body swing back around front as well. The weight and sudden shift causes the door to swing shut with a small click of the lock and the raven flies atop, pulling a tarp over the wire and obscuring the now very angry monkey. Flying down swiftly it collects the piece of fruit and flies back down the wharf. Vailian pushes his way down the quay and tries to catch sight of the elusive black bird. Finally catching sight of it atop a small pile of rope near a ships mooring eating the small snack, Vailian approaches slowly.

"Now I don't know what other tricks you may know but I could use a bird of your skills on my journey." Having heard of ravens' fondness for shiny objects he draws forth a small shiny pearl he had found on the beach nearby while gathering clams for dinner the day before. "Come here little fella, I'll give ya this shiny.. " Setting the pearl on a knot in the wood of the deck board before the Raven, the Mage crouches and waits. "Hark, Hark, Hark! Shine-eeee!" the bird caws suddenly and lands lightly before the item. "So you can speak? Truly you are a wondrous bird! Snatching up the pearl Vailian holds it before him in his open palm, "I don't know if you understand this but I will give you this if you come with me." Pointing at the bird, the pearl and then his shoulder Vailian awaits the creatures response.

But, before it can do anything the seller yells down the quay, "That's my bird! No one steals my bird, he draws a viscous looking scimitar from large red sash stretching around his gigantic girth and charges at Shade. Quickly parrying with his staff, Shade finds himself on the defensive as the scimitar cuts deadly arcs down from on high, then back to the right, then the fat man retracts and pulls the blade up and swings down at an angle from left to right. Vailian, now fully given over to his alter ego Shade, finds new reserves of strength and not only parties the swing before it can cut him asunder, he turns the blade by reversing his grip and dropping the trailing edge of his staff downward with the momentum of the swing. The seller, off balanced by the move staggers forward only to have his back cracked by the staff, driving him further forward and nearly into the sea. A last second grab of his hands finds the prow of a ship docked there and as it pushes out under the weight, the man quickly finds himself in an awkward position. Having dropped his scimitar into the ship and now leaning out at such an angle he no longer proves a threat.

"I did not take your bird, I simply marveled at his intelligence, something that I must say I do not find in you. How much for the creature?"

"You think I would sell it to YOU!" he snarls through gritted teeth.

"Well, I don't see you in possession of the product anymore, and hardly in a state to barter effectively, but it is a fine bird and I do so enjoy its antics. I'll give you a gold and you will be happy with that, because I trust that a bird that intent on freedom will likely not long be with you either way." With that, Vailian (now fully returned from his momentary loss to the entity that is Shade), drops a coin into the sack of treats hung from the wide red sash around the tanned man's belly. Turning about to walk away from the scene he notices for the first time the crowd of onlookers and smiles behind his cowl. That smile only grows larger as he notes the Raven having returned to land on the quay, right beside the mooring rope which is strained by the man's leaning against the prow. With three sharp strikes of his beak the mooring line threads and breaks, causing the fat man's weight to push the prow out further and fall face first into the harbor.

Vailian isn't looking though, as he walks past the bird and towards the crowd, and feels the Raven land atop his shoulder. The crowd parts for him to walk through and he sees Thorvald at the back a dour expression on his face.

"Do you always have to cause such chaos? The guards could have come and still might."

"I do not cause the chaos, I merely find myself amongst it, and do not choose another path." Vailian carries on walking as the sounds of a very angry merchant sloshing around in the harbor attest to the chaos. "I do believe that it is well past time for us to set sail, don't you think?" Vailian saunters up the gangplank of their ship as several guards rush past heading down the docks. Suddenly setting sail doesn't seem so much a terrifying venture but a chance to bond with a second friend, one more in tune with Vailian's own mischievous self.

"Hark, Hark, Hark! Sssthink So!" the way he said 'think so' had Vailian puzzled for he could swear he had heard something else from his new friend.
